December 31 - Resolution Revolution

With 2010 soon behind us and 2011 looming before us, what are you resolved to do this year?  Every year at this time we look back on the last year and take stock.  Did we lose the weight we wanted to lose?  Did we better organize our lives?

New Year's is a time of year when many individuals commit to beginning a new chapter in life. It is an opportunity to refresh and make a change personally and to make an impact in our communities or environment. For many of us, New Year's Day marks the beginning of a new experience, trend or possibly breaking an old habit. There are many common New Year's resolutions, such as weight loss, spending time with family and even saving money.  This year, let's revolutionize our New Year's resolutions.  As an alternative, consider these unique New Year's Resolution ideas that I found on the web or be creative and come up with your own:

1. Have Compassion
This is easy and hard at the same time. So often in our world, unfortunate things happen to unfortunate people. Natural Disasters, economic downturn, disease, war and a myriad of other things. Often times in our world we forget that we have many things that others do not have, whether through misfortunate events or simply misfortune of birth.

Either way, this new years eve, it would be great to make a resolution to be more compassionate to those who do not have what you have. Not necessarily those who have less then you do, but anyone who is in need of some compassion from another human being. Take some bread to a soup kitchen, volunteer some time this year, take some stuff you don't need to a homeless camp in your area. Give a rescued pet a forever home, tutor a child in need, offer to help your neighbors or something else you can think of. Spread the love!

2. Express Gratitude Starting this New Year's Day compile a list of  people you interact with on a regular basis. Come up with one person for each week of the year!  For most people, identifying 52 individuals is not very difficult to do. Consider family and friends,  church members, to a local florist or even a hairdresser, begin listing all of the individuals who provide a service to you at some point during the year. From this list of 52 individuals, begin sending a card each week of the year as a way of expressing gratitude for their service and care.

3. Give of Your Time
Donate a day to Charity every month.  Charities all over the country rely upon volunteers from the community to support and serve the cause.  As a New Year's Resolution, pick a regular and consistent day of the month to participate in local charity volunteer service. For example, you may choose the first Saturday of each month. Find a local charitable organization in need of assistance and make a commitment to work  a specified day of each month. In doing so, you will provide support to the organization and your community.

4. Invest Yourself in Others  (I love this idea!)
Bake For Your Neighbor: In every neighborhood there is a senior adult living alone. As a friendly neighbor, identify one or two senior adults who reside alone and pick a day each month to share baked goods with them. Prior to doing so, inquire of any health concerns and special interests. Prepare baked items based on the senior adults health needs and prepare neat gift bags with activity based items which may strengthen memory skills such as word problems or search and find game books.

For 2011,  consider revolutionizing your resolutions!    Establish a New Year's resolution unique to your community and to the people who bless your life. Rather than focusing on personal goals, focus on paying forward a token of kindness. In doing so, you may find your New Year's Resolution will become a positive new habit and tradition for many years to come.

December 30 - ARF!

Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) was founded in 2005 by Elizabeth (Pippa) Jackson. However, Pippa has been rescuing animals all her life, and the formation of ARF as an official non profit group was the result of a life-long dream. She has chased frightened dogs down busy freeways, nearly been shot at as she tried to rescue a stray off the property of a man trying to shoot him, plucked kittens out of garbage bins, and always travels with a crate and a spare lead.

Odds are, if you are a friend of Pippa, you've got at least one dog or cat she's rescued in your home.

ARF depends on the contributions of friends, neighbors, local vets, and pretty much anybody else they can charm. It is the mission of ARF to provide shelter and sanctuary to abandoned, abused and neglected companion animals awaiting adoption in Mississippi, focusing on the metropolitan tri-county area.  ARF rescues, rehabilitates and socializes their rescues, instilling in the animals the ability to trust, love and be loved either again or for the first time.

When ARF takes in a rescued stray animal, that animal receives any and all necessary medical care, heartworm tests and medication, spay or neuter, and then the hunt is on to find that animal it's "forever home". We work carefully with potential adoptive families to ensure that the animal you adopt is the one that will best fit into your family and lifestyle.

Rankin County, where ARF is located, has one of the highest number of animal control pick ups in the State, and within 5 days, a very high number of these animals are euthanized.  ARF is working to make a change in the reality of this as well as in the mindset of a community who accepts this as a norm. ARF wants to effect change through education and activism, as well as to provide an alternative to the only animal control option the community has had: euthanization of stray and unwanted companion animals. ARF strongly supports spay/neuter policies to reduce companion animal over population and follows strict spay/neuter policies with its own animals pre-adoption.

The most important thing that you can do is spay or neuter your pet, never buy from a pet store or backyard breeder, and educate yourself about the overpopulation of domesticated pets in this country.

Read Elizabeth's Blog to get a peak into the life of a rescuer!  Some of the posts are tough to read...Thank you Elizabeth for having a soft heart...for inspiring us to be better and for loving those who may have never known love without you!

December 29 - "A Drop of Water"

I totally relate to the philosophy behind today's featured charity.   One of the tenets behind this blog is "A small help performed by many can have a HUGE impact!"  That is the philosophy behind Jolkona.

"Jolkona" means "drop of water" in Bengali. It represents the idea that when it comes to charitable giving, "every drop counts." Jolkana hopes that their approach to philanthropy – facilitating small donations with a big impact and a personal connection – will help usher in a new era of giving, where donors feel more inspired to give, charitable organizations are able to efficiently connect to a broader donor base, and those in need of help benefit from a larger donor pool.  Jolkona connects you with global philanthropic opportunities and shows the impact of your donations.

Jolkona Foundation makes it easy for you to give directly to low-cost, high-impact philanthropic opportunities around the world. They work with carefully chosen partner organizations to create affordable donation options with a measurable impact, from planting trees in Honduras to providing food and housing for an HIV-positive child in Cambodia,  providing doctor visits to rural areas, or funding solar stoves. 100% of your donation goes to the project you’ve chosen.

Unlike most nonprofits, at Jolkona, the giving experience starts after the check is written. They work with their partners to honor your donation by providing proof of impact (such as a picture, a video or a story) for every donation through Jolkona's personalized website. Through "My Jolkona," you can check on the progress of your latest gift and keep track of past donations, so you’ll know the impact you’ve made. You can also see the total impact of donations from the entire Jolkona Community.

Jolkona believes that the youth of today can play a critical role in changing the face of philanthropy into a more accountable and inclusive vision. By harnessing the power of technology to connect with global causes, they hope to empower young people with the knowledge that you don’t have to wait to be a philanthropist. We can all make a difference today.

December 27 - Drive to Give!

Here's a painless way of "steering" cash to The Make-A-Wish Foundation.  This one will cost you nothing but a bit of your time!  Test driving a Saab before January 3 can help make a wish come true for a child with a life-threatening medical condition thanks to the Saab Drive to Give program and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Saab Cars North America will donate $50 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation each time one of its vehicles, including the all-new 9-5 sedan or iconic 9-3 sedan or sport combi models are sampled, thus helping enrich the lives of children facing life-threatening illnesses, their families and those who love them.

The process is simple: a licensed driver comes to a Saab dealership, completes a simple registration form and test drives an all-new Saab vehicle.  Saab will then donate $50 to The Make-A-Wish Foundation.   The goal for all US dealers is a $250,000 donation with a guaranteed minimum donation of $50,000.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation provides hope to children with life-threatening medical conditions, granting their wishes through the support and kindness of their fellow human beings. The charity has granted over 193,000 wishes since 1980.

Find a SAAB dealer near you.  (Get in there and take that test drive!)

December 26 - Recycle Your Christmas Cards

Another Christmas has come and gone... hope everyone had a great time with friends and family!  Now the cleanup begins...but before you throw away all those Christmas cards you received - check out this great way to make a difference!  Helping kids while helping the environment!

Over thirty years ago, wishing to show appreciation to their donors for making St. Jude’s Ranch for Children possible, the idea was conceived for turning the previous year’s Christmas cards into "new" cards for the coming season. The recipients were so delighted with their unique "thank you," they requested the children sell them the special cards. And so, the St. Jude’s Ranch Recycled Card Program was born.  Since then, the program expanded to include all occasion greeting cards… People from all over the world have sent St. Jude's Ranch their used greeting cards!

Operated by Kids, Corp., a program for the children at St. Jude’s Ranch to learn entrepreneurship skills, the children participate in making the new cards by removing the front and attaching a new back. The result is a beautiful new card made by the children and volunteers. The benefits are two-fold: customers receive "green" holiday cards for use and the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and importance of "going green".

The ongoing support for the Recycled Card Program has been overwhelming! The Program grew and soon St. Jude's was receiving over one million cards.  They have since redesigned the process to more efficiently manage the increased production from the increased volume and they welcome your submissions!

NOTE:  They currently have an increased need for both Birthday and Thank You card submissions.

To Donate Cards:

St. Jude's Children's Ranch welcomes your donation and asks that you please review the below tips before sending your donation. Currently, they have found the least expensive way to mail large quantities of card donations is through the USPS in a Flat Rate Box which holds up to 70 pounds (available at the Post Office).

Card Donating Tips:

All types of greeting cards, including Christmas are used.
Only the card front can be used (please check to be sure the back side is clear of any writing, etc.)

NOTE:  We can not accept Hallmark, Disney or American Greeting cards.

5" x 7" size or smaller is preferred.

December 25 - MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!   Christmas is my favorite time of the year!  It is a magical time when everyone is happy and giving and everybody cares for everybody else.   There is so much to love about Christmas!

As a child, every year I couldn't wait to watch all of the Holiday Specials on television!  Way back then, it wasn't like it is now where you can watch the videos or dvd's. They only ran the specials once a year and they seemed a little more special that way.   My absolute favorite holiday special is A Charlie Brown Christmas.  And my favorite scene is Linus' monologue about the true meaning of Christmas!

...and that's what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown!

So today... make time for family and friends.  Gather with loved ones and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.

December 24 - Christmas Jar

Back in March of this year, when I first started this blog adventure I am on, one of the first posts I included was about Christmas Jars.  It's not too late to participate!   If you don't have a jar, find an envelope and if you don't have change, stuff it with dollars!

What is a Christmas Jar?

A Christmas Jar is a pickle jar, peanut butter jar, Mason jar or whatever else you have around to collect your spare change each day.

All coins are dedicated to the jar, and during the week before Christmas you carefully select someone to give it to anonymously. Was a neighbor laid off? Is a coworker struggling with health problems? Has a friend lost a loved one?

Simply put your jar on their porch, in their car, on their desk--wherever--and you could change their life for good!   $50, $100, even $200, you'll be surprised how much change you can generate and how much you can affect someone's life.

Below is an actual letter from the recipient of a Christmas Jar:

Oklahoma City, OK:

Things were not going well for our family this year. I had been in the hospital for my heart, and then hurt my back. We were scraping together what money we had to by Christmas gifts for our kids and still pay our bills. I had been praying for help, and trying to find my Christmas spirit. We were sitting around the television watching Christmas shows When there was a knock on the door. With my back hurting it took me a little bit to get to the door. When I opened the door no one was there but there was a jar of money sitting on my porch. I had no idea what was going on so I picked it up and read the tag telling me what a Christmas jar was. I was touched so deeply I couldn't explain what it was so I just handed it to her. After everyone read it we were all on the verge of tears. How could someone care enough about our family to do this. I got up and walked outside looked to heaven and thanked the Lord for the answer to my prayers. I came back in and searched the internet to get more information about Christmas Jars. I Shared on Facebook how touched I was and how thankful I was just in case whoever left it there might see it.

We have decided that we need to read the book, and Christmas Jars are going to be a tradition for our family. We will collect all our change for the next year and however many jars we can fill will be given to families that need it.

Read a collection of true Christmas Jar miracles, provided by readers around the country.  I hope you will take a few minutes to read some of the stories and get inspired to make a difference!

December 23 - Giving Gives Back

Here is another GREAT way to help for FREE!  Take a minute to read today's post and help make a difference. TurboTax, the tax filing-software company, is really getting into the holiday spirit this year! They are giving away $100,000 to charities of consumers’ choosing on Facebook. TurboTax is promoting charitable giving at the end of each year to remind people that they can secure last minute tax savings by giving to charity. This year, TurboTax has launched "Giving Gives Back" on Facebook and is making a $5 donation in consumers’ names to causes ranging from emergency preparedness to lending a helping hand to America’s youth.

You can donate to your favorite by “Liking” TurboTax on Facebook and selecting the charity you would like to receive a 5. donation from TurboTax.  Causes include American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Feeding America, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Goodwill.

Through Dec. 31, 2010, TurboTax will donate up to $100,000 to a selection of charities on behalf of consumers.  Simply visit the TurboTax Facebook Page or givinggivesback.com to find out how you can have TurboTax donate $5 to a charity on your behalf.

Tis’ the season for spreading holiday cheer. Not only will charitable contributions help those in need, in many cases, it can boost your tax refund as well.

“There are a number of ways to save money and give back. Charitable donations made before Dec. 31 can be an easy way to lower your tax bill and give back to the community,” said Bob Meighan, CPA and vice president of TurboTax.

Tips for Making Giving Give Back:

· Think about it: Consider the types of charities you want to give to. What really moves you and makes you want to give?

· Make it count: Before you open your wallet, open your browser. A quick search will help you pick an organization that is eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions so that your contributions count.

· Act fast: Dec. 31, 2010 is the deadline for making charitable contributions count on this year’s tax return.

· Don’t forget the little stuff: Some out-of-pocket expenses like parking, supplies and mileage driven to and from volunteering at a qualifying charity are deductible.

· Keep documentation: Make sure to keep receipts for both cash and in-kind charitable donations. Every receipt should include the charity name, date, amount of your donation and the resale value of any items you may have received for your contribution.

December 22 - Saving Shelter Pets, Inc.

Saving Shelter Pets (SSP) is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization. We facilitate rescues from high-kill animal shelters and promote spay & neuter, in an effort to give all pets the chance at life they truly deserve.

SSP is a small, all-volunteer organization with supporters and volunteers located throughout the country. We rely solely on donations to continue our rescue and spay/neuter efforts.  Saving Shelter Pets strives to eliminate euthanasia as a method of population control for homeless companion animals, by providing no-kill alternative solutions and proactively addressing the problem of pet overpopulation.

Saving Shelter Pets activities include:
  • Saving lives of shelter animals in danger of euthanization, by moving them to safe, no-kill rescues.
  • Providing access to proactive pet population control methods, i.e. spay/neuter programs.
  • Promoting educational opportunities to increase awareness of the problems and consequences associated with pet overpopulation, pet abandonment in shelters, and inhumane treatment of pets.

The Rescue & Transport Program saves dogs and cats from high-kill shelters in the Southeast (primarily in northern Georgia and the greater Atlanta area) and moves them to safe, no-kill rescues in the Northeast part of the US. All animals receive full medical care and then are quarantined at a boarding facility or in foster care until they are healthy to travel. We use professional transporters to transfer the animals safely from Georgia to their rescues the Northeast, where they have a much better opportunity for adoption. All veterinary, boarding, and transport costs are paid by SSP thanks to the generous donations of people like you!

The Bernie's Buddies Fund provides financial assistance for dogs in our Rescue and Transport Program who test positive for Heartworm, a potentially fatal disease commonly found in dogs in the southeastern US. This fund pays for the treatment itself, plus the boarding costs for each dog during its recovery period.  We typically rescue 1–2 heartworm positive dogs each month. Treatment and boarding for each dog is very expensive, and can cost up to $500.

The Spay & Neuter program is the pro-active element of our fight against pet overpopulation. SSP collaborates with various local rescue groups in Georgia and other states to offer low-cost spay/neuter clinics and events.

December 21 - Spare Change for Real Change!

EVERY  SIX  SECONDS  A  CHILD  DIES  FROM MALNUTRITION.

Old Need. New Strategy.

Tragically, five million children die from malnutrition every year.  Malnutrition is considered to be a child's most difficult challenge. Most grain-based relief foods, designed to fight hunger, are often deficient of the basic nutrients required to keep children healthy. Children suffering from malnutrition need more natural, nutrient-dense foods to best support their nutritional needs. Recent advancements in hydroponically grown vegetables are an example of how new science can provide new sources of standardized, plant-sourced nutrients that can help meet this need. Using this technology, for the exclusive use by MannaRelief, Mannatech, Inc.  has created a ready-to-use, nutrient packed complex called PhytoBlend powder. PhytoBlend powder provides children with natural vitamins and plant-sourced minerals in nutritionally effective amounts and will be the most nutritionally sound food these children will eat all day.

The Spare Change for Real Change campaign allows anyone to make a difference for just $0.16 a day.  Just $0.16 a day?  That's right! $0.16 a day may not seem like much, but for a child that might only get 2-3 servings of fruits and vegetables a year, $0.16 can be a life-saver. Pennies a day provides a child with the most advanced nutritional support that their body could possibly receive.

The goal is to connect one million sponsors to one million malnourished children. Be one of the million that changes a life.

December 20 - 25 Days of Giving

From December 1st through December 25th, 2010 join with The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer in their “25 Days of Giving” fundraiser.   This holiday season lets Celebrate the GIFT OF LIFE...and GIVE to those who are fighting for theirs.

Help The Austin Hatcher Foundation raise $10,000 in 25 days! Every GIFT makes a difference in the lives of children with cancer and their families.

The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer was born of unspeakable heartache and grief.  The loss of ONE child birthed a mission to save THOUSANDS of others.  Jim and Amy Jo Osborn lost their beautiful little boy Austin when he was 9 weeks old.  Hatch took his last breath in Jims arms as Amy Jo sat next to them on the floor.

Childhood cancers are the #1 disease killer of children - more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined.  One in every 330 children will develop cancer by the age of 20. On the average, 12,500 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year.  On the average, 1 in every 4 elementary schools has a child with cancer. The average high school has two students who are a current or former cancer patient. In the U.S., about 46 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every weekday.

While the cancer death rate has dropped more dramatically for children than for any other age group, 2,300 children and teenagers will die each year from cancer.  Childhood leukemia (making up the largest group of childhood cancers) was once a certain death sentence, but now can be cured almost 80% of the time. Today, up to 75% of the children with cancer can be cured, yet, some forms of childhood cancers have proven so resistant to treatment that, in spite of research, a cure is illusive. Several childhood cancers continue to have a very poor prognosis, including: brain stem tumors, metastatic sarcomas, relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and relapsed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

We celebrate. We champion.
We hope. We love.

Our Mission.  Our mission is to support research towards the diagnoses, treatment and development of a cure for pediatric cancer and to provide support and hope to children and families undergoing treatment as well as to those who have lost children due to cancer.

Who we are.  A foundation created for the profit of common good by parents who know the long reach of pediatric cancer. Born from loss, Austin Hatcher Foundation passionately values the sparkle of infant life and moves towards

What we do.  We champion bold research, new treatments, and the vision for a cure. We join families in their struggle by providing tangible support.

How we move.  Austin Hatcher links its corporate partners and financial network with pioneers in medicine and providers of family care.

Why we’re here.  To help families overcome childhood cancer by financing research and treatment developments, awareness programs, diversionary therapies, and the many unforeseeable costs a family often endures.

What we hope.  That out of the loss of one, thousands will be served and saved.

December 19 - Ronald McDonald House Charities

For 36 years, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC, Inc.) has been working to improve the health and well being of children – touching over 4 million children worldwide every year.

While Ronald McDonald House Charities cannot make medicine taste better or take away painful treatments, they can help lessen the burden and ensure more than 4 million families a year have the stability and resources they need to keep their child healthy and happy. RMHC believes that families are stronger when they are together, and their presence helps a sick child heal faster and cope better.

They strive to be part of the solution to issues challenging families today. Families are challenged with how to stay near and support a hospitalized child, how to afford staying together in another city while a child is undergoing treatment, or even getting basic medical and dental care in underserved communities. RMHC uses their resources to help families gain access to health care services during critical points in their children’s lives

With a network of Ronald McDonald House Charities Chapters in 52 countries and regions around the world, we help children and their families through more than:
  • 300 Ronald McDonald Houses
  • 153 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms
  • 39 Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles

December 18 - Reduce. Reuse. Freecycle!

Here's a great way to make a help others while also helping the environment!  Do you have STUFF sitting around that you would like to get rid of but you do not want to throw it out to sit in a landfill?  Give it away to someone who needs it!

"Our mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community."

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,864 groups with 7,603,875 members around the world. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free, but you must set up a Yahoo! account to participate.

In just a few short years, Freecycle™ has generated an spectacular worldwide outpouring of generosity, changing the world one gift at a time. Folks with extra happily share; those who need gracefully receive, all without judgement - or any funds - passed.  Freecycle™ performs many wonderful functions: building bonds and community, keeping material items from the landfills, and redeeming the clutter than consumes us by moving it forward to a new, productive life.

Due to the incredible efforts of nearly 10,000 local volunteers, The Freecycle Network™ is able to keep its administrative expenses quite low. However, as the largest recycling and reuse website in the world, we have rather substantial server, bandwidth and coding expenses. And, your help to keep this incredible grassroots effort going is deeply appreciated. Freecycle™ welcomes donations to help meet these expenses and to continue to refine and spread the extraordinarily successful Freecycle™ infrastructure. Your generous donations to The Freecycle Network are tax deductible as we are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

December 17 - Be the Change. Save a Life.

This blog is all about inspiring people to take action... To make a difference...To be the change they want to see in the World.

I generally do not highlight television shows, but today I am going to highlight not only a show, but a movement.  Tonight at 10PM ET,  ABC News Kicks-Off  a year-long global health series,  “Be the Change: Save a Life.”   I am really excited about this program and I would recommend that you watch if you are able.  I believe you will be touched in a mighty way - You will be inspired to get involved and "Be the Change."  The more you learn about the world and the needs of others, the more open your heart becomes to making a difference!  A Special Edition of “20/20” Anchored by Diane Sawyer highlights the World’s Top Global Health Issues and gives the audience Simple Ways to Make A Difference.

Tonight, ABC News begins a year-long odyssey – covering a story that spans the world; challenging Americans to save untold lives. “Be the Change: Save a Life” sets out on a journey across three continents and into nine countries, focused on the health conditions endured by the poorest of the poor – and some of the innovations that may be able to save them.

“Be the Change: Save a Life” debuts with a day of reporting across all ABC News broadcasts and platforms and includes a special edition of “20/20” titled “Be the Change: Save a Life” anchored by Diane Sawyer at 10pm ET on Friday, December 17th.

From pregnant mothers to newborns, children and adults, the day of programming will examine six of the world’s top health problems, and share simple and practical ways the audience can make an immediate difference.

A story may not be able to change the world, but it can inspire the world to change.

Inadequate newborn care, malaria, polio, HIV, tuberculosis and a lack of critical vaccines still kill millions of people in developing countries every year. Experts say these are real challenges, but there are also innovative, creative solutions that can save lives -- today.

As part of the ABC News initiative, a dedicated website, SaveOne.net, will premier the same night. For the next year, it will act as a clearing-house for global health information. Viewers who want to know more and get involved will find ways, large and small, to make a difference in their own communities and around the world. The site will provide unique content from ABC News reporters around the globe as they report through the year.

So please watch the "Be the Change" series on ABC and check out the SaveOne.net website and get inspired to "BE THE CHANGE."

December 16 - Bridging the Gap between Generations

Each year, millions of people spend their holidays confined to institutions ... and, as our population ages, that number is increasing. Many of these people have outlived relatives and friends, or for some, those people have moved far away. Life can be a lonely experience with few opportunities to make a difference.

At the same time, many other people look for ways to make their holidays more fulfilling ... ways to return themselves to the true spirit of the season. The Holiday Project provides an opportunity that satisfies both these needs.

The Holiday Project is a national nonprofit organization comprised of thousands of volunteers who visit with thousands more people spending Christmas, Chanukah and other holidays during the year confined to hospitals, nursing homes and other institutions. What makes The Holiday Project so special is that our visitors not only contribute to others, they also allow others to contribute to them.

Most Holiday Project visits occur in nursing homes because that is where people who have the greatest need reside. Each community Chapter chooses the facilities where volunteers visit. In some communities, volunteers also visit with people who reside in Independent and Assisted Living, hospitals, psychiatric institutions, group homes, and even prisons.

The first Holiday Project Visit occurred on Christmas Day, 1973 when eight people joined together in San Francisco to visit patients at Laguna Honda Hospital. Afterwards, as the volunteers enjoyed lunch together, they decided, the following year, they would do it again and ask others to join them.

For the next seven years, more and more people, in communities all over the United States joined in what was then called The Holiday Hospital Project.  In 1980, the Board of Directors decided to register as a 501(c)(3) non-profit called The Holiday Project. Participation continued to expand. At the pinnacle of its growth, in the mid-80s, Holiday Project volunteers were organizing Visits in 36 states.

In this, our 30th year operating as a non profit organization, The Holiday Project remains committed to ensuring that people all over the country, people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and economic, levels have the opportunity to contribute to each other and bridge the gap between generations through our program of volunteers visiting people in institutions.

December 15 - Cup of Joe For A Joe

CUP OF JOE FOR A JOE gives everyone an opportunity to express their support for our men and women in uniform through the simple act of buying a cup of premium coffee and having it delivered along with their own personalized message of thanks to a Soldier serving overseas.

The whole idea behind Cup Of Joe For A Joe is to give folks here at home an opportunity to send a Cup of Joe (Troops call them a COJ) and a letter of thanks to a Soldier, Airman, Sailor, Marine or Coast Guardsman overseas. Because the person here at home who sends the COJ and the Service Member who receives it are matched on a completely random basis, you don't have to personally know anyone who is serving overseas in order to send a Cup Of Joe.

Troops deployed overseas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) or Operation New Dawn (Iraq) sign up to participate in Cup Of Joe For A Joe by enrolling on the Green Beans Coffee website or at the Green Beans cafe on their base.

When COJ receives contributions from people here at home they use a process to randomly assign the COJ gifts to the Troops. They send them an email notice telling them that they have received a Cup Of Joe from you and  include the email letter you wrote. They also give the Service Member an opportunity to write back to you and register their COJ for pick up at the Green Beans cafe on their base. All they need do to pick up your gift is stop by the cafe and ID themselves to the staff.

Sending a Cup Of Joe is easy, takes just a few moments, and at only $2 costs about the same as the spare change in your pocket.

Today only... Green Beans Coffee will MATCH YOUR COJ CONTRIBUTION dollar for dollar with a cash donation to Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund, Inc. This wonderful organization helps provide college grants to surviving U.S. Military children whose lives have been affected by the loss of a parent in the Afghan...istan or Iraq wars. The program has been expanded to include spouses and families of severely disabled veterans affected by these two conflicts. If you've been thinking about sending a Cup Of Joe to our Troops this holiday season, now is a great time to do so. Not only will you bring a little bit of cheer to our Troops overseas, you'll also help fund an education for a child who's lost a parent in service to our country.

December 14 - Read A Book. Give A Book.

Take a look at this great way for parents (or grandparents) and children to give back as a family!   My children are in college now, but I would have loved to have used this as a teaching tool when they were younger. (Guess I'll have to wait for the grandkids) We Give Books provides parents and kids the opportunity to spend time together, it also provides the opportunity to teach your children about giving back all while helping your child develop a love for reading!    BEST OF ALL  -  IT'S FREE!

We Give Books is a free website that enables anyone with access to the Internet to put books in the hands of children who don’t have them, simply by reading online. You simply choose the charity you want to read for and then select the books you want to read. For each book you read online, We  Give Books will donate a book to a leading literacy group on your behalf.  The more you read, the more they give.

First, get started by choosing the literacy organization your own online reading will support. Choose Room to Read, for example, to help support libraries for young people around the world. Select the NEA Foundation's Books Across America program to help stock libraries in need across the United States. You can even support community-based campaigns hosted by local school districts or nonprofits.

One of the aims of We Give Books is to encourage the conversations with your child that will better ensure he or she becomes a life-long giver. As you consider the non-profit organizations from which you can choose, take time to talk through the goals of each charity and your reasons for selecting the one you do. As long as you\'re a member, you can support as many campaigns as you like. We Give Books even keeps track of the books you've donated to each campaign for you.

With your literacy campaign selected, it's time to read.  Select a title from our ever-growing library of great children's books and start reading online with a child in your life. Each time you read a book online, you help give a brand-new hardcover or paperback book from the Penguin and Dorling Kindersley library to the campaign you've selected. Read as many books as you like, as many times as you like.  Every campaign has its own donation goal. Once a campaign you've supported reaches its goal, you and your child will receive a personalized letter of thanks for your effort.

Your reading at We Give Books helps share books with young people who need them. It also helps the great non-profit organizations with whom they've joined forces to support these young people. As a member, you can learn more about the importance of early reading and about the great literacy campaigns supported by We Give Books. If you like, you can also create reading groups, community reading-a-thons, or giving drives.  Your reading - and your giving - can be as social or independent as you want.

Sign up at We Give Books and start reading!   For every book you read, We Give Books will donate one book!
